Initial Purpose of our Design System Manager

Creating a library of frequently used components in Sketch to speed up prototyping on the UX design team

Partner with our developers to link the design system to a database via Storybook to accelerate development timelines.

Sketch Design System

Highlights

Library of frequently used components, such as colors, buttons and alerts, etc. Dramatically increased speed of creating mockups for designers.

Challenges

Only our design team used sketch, developer involvement was difficult since our largest group of developers did not see the value integrating the design system for one group of designers.

Next Steps

Move to Adobe XD to align with other design teams.

Creating a single source of truth for building designs for our website

Collaboration

With multiple design teams contributing to the e-commerce website, we aimed for a more collaborative approach, bringing together members from three different teams.

Consistency

Building a library of commonly used components for designers to access and contribute to would bring a more cohesive look to our website.

Increased Productivity

Not having to recreate the same component for multiple mockups would cut design time to a 1/3 giving us more time to create new experiences and components.

Documentation

Comprehensive write-ups highlighting the usage of each component, along with suggestions for implementation, would ensure consistent and accessible designs.

Adobe XD Design System

Highlights

Super robust design system that was used by multiple design teams, production of mockups increased drastically.

Challenges

Without a dedicated Design System designer, adding and creating new components was slower than anticipated.

Next Steps

With Adobe XD being sunsetted, our team must move programs again this time to Figma.

Figma Design System

Highlights

Our design intern's knowledge of Figma set us up with a design system so quickly. We would gather all designs needed to be added while they created complex components and variations.

Challenges

Our design team being new to Figma made it difficult to audit and test the new components. Having a dedicated design system person was crucial but isn't budgeted for long term.

Conclusion

Creating and maintaining a design system can take a lot of work but the benefits of consistent design and faster prototypes is invaluable.
